2  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: blouse to go with a suit, help! on: June 26, 2006, 02:42:38 pm
Some of the nicest looking shirts/blouses I ever wore with a suit were actually tee-shirts made from something other than cotton.  Some of the ones made with Lycra give a little stretch and shine that make them look really nice; plus they come in a wide range of colors.

Another option is to get a nice camisole that is made to allow the lacy top part to show at the top of the suit jacket.  My only problem with a camisole is that they usually have bra type straps and you have to leave your jacket on all day.

You might include any funeral arrangements in the e-mail, also.

Sometimes, families will ask that in lieu of flowers that people make donations to their favorite charity, so that might be included in the e-mail, if known.

4  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Is there a candy dish on your desk? on: June 19, 2006, 04:23:47 pm
Yes, I have a candy dish on my desk, but you can't see it from the door of my office.  Folks who have business with my bosses will see it as they pass my desk.  I keep Wintergreen Lifesavers in it.  Some folks will take one to freshen up their breath before a meeting.  I only have one person who just stops in just to get a piece of candy.  A while back, he brought me a big bag of Wintergreen Lifesavers to replace those he's eaten.

My candy dish was given to me by my first boss in this job, so I have kept it on my desk.  I had another boss who would toss in a quarter or whatever every time he took a piece of candy.  That helped me keep it full.

I don't eat the candy on my desk.  If I ever eat one, I'll eat the whole bowl.

I started out at Office Click, also.  I think found it through an advertisement to visit the website.  I also ordered (and still have) my "Office Click It!" silly slammer.  My favorite thing it says is "You want it when?  Office Click it."

I don't remember if I ever posted on that site or just lurked.  Soon after that The Admin Assistant came to be and I've been a "member" ever since.

I've been in the same job for the entire time.  I work for the military and I've had several bosses, civilian and military.  Most of them have been good, but the one that stayed the longest, I could have done without.  (Isn't that how it always works out?)

Maybe the VA does it a little bit differently than the DON.

In my case, the HR Office would call the Supervisor in my organization's Personnel Department to request a release date.  That would result in a call to my supervisor to see when he would release me.  Normally, they try to coincide release dates with the end of pay periods and they CAN hold you for 30 days if it isn't exactly a promotion.

That said, perhaps it won't be a surprise to your supervisor that you are leaving.

CG,
I didn't think you could negotiate that sort of thing in government jobs unless it was advertised at more than one pay grade.  For instance, GS-07/09 Target GS09.  You might think you are qualified at the higher level, but they might offer the job at the lower level and "promote" you after a specific time period.  If that's the case, maybe you could try and talk them into "save pay" during that period, but I wouldn't approach it until I knew at what level they were going to offer the job.

I tend to agree with Geminigirl on this one.  I DO think that media coverage has improved to the point that we have instant access to everything going on in the world today.  We are "up close and personal" with every major event and news story happening at any time and any where.  Forty years ago when we were having a lot of bad weather, the news wasn't so "global."

We shouldn't be at all surprised by the devastation caused by these hurricanes because in a lot of cases, people have built expensive hotels and condos right on the natural barriers that used to provide at least a little protection.

It is sad to see so many people lose everything they own, but you can't stop Mother Nature.

I drink a 20 oz. Diet Mountain Dew every morning. I usually nurse it until lunchtime. After that, it's water for the rest of the day. I usually drink 2 liters or more every day.

I don't care for the flavorings that you can add to water. To me, if your water is "good," it doesn't need anything else. We have a water purification system at home, so I recycled several liter-size bottles and I always have fresh, clean water ready to drink.

Bosses Day is always October 16th.  This year, that just happens to be a Sunday.  It's your call then as to whether to "observe" it with them on Friday or Monday.  I usually use the old "if it's on Saturday, celebrate on Friday" rule.  When the date falls on a Sunday then, I celebrate on Monday.  Hope this helps.

Great topic!  I recently saw a doctor's name and it was spelled "Choi."  The receptionist said it was pronounced "Shay."  Since I've never seen the doctor, your guess is as good as mine as to his nationality.

Thanks for the good wishes.  We skated by with this one.  We had some downpours from the feeder bands, but all in all, we were blessed to miss this one.

My little city is full of folks from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida panhandle, though.

The base where I work is housing close to 2500 Sailors and Marines who were evacuated from Pensacola.  Bless their hearts; this is the second time this summer that they've had to evacuate.

13  General Discussion / The Humour Zone / Who are you? on: June 08, 2005, 11:21:16 am
A man standing in line at a check out counter of a grocery store was very surprised when a very attractive woman behind him said, "Hello!" Her face was beaming.

He gave her that "Who are you?” look and couldn't remember ever having seen her before.  Noticing his look, she figured she had made a mistake and apologized.

"Look," she said "I'm really sorry but when I first saw you, I thought you were the father of one of my children," and walked out of the store.

The guy was dumbfounded and thought to himself, "What is the world coming to? Here is an attractive woman who can't keep track of who fathers her children!"  He was, however, somewhat flattered that he might resemble one of her former lovers. Then again he got a little panicky.

"I don't remember her," he thought but, MAYBE . . . during one of the wild parties he had been to when he was in college, perhaps he did father her child!

He sat in his car, holding his head in his hands, never realizing that she was his son's second grade teacher.

I do not have an online blog and if I did, I certainly would not include personal information or anything about my employer.

I do, however, keep an electronic diary or journal on my computer.  Usually, I only write in it when something really memorable happens.  I use initials rather than names if I can without confusing the issue just in case someone else manages to open that file.  I do the same thing in personal e-mails.

My DS2 kept an online blog for a little while.  He let me have the link to it so I could read it.  I told him he should be a little more discreet in his writing and to not use names, places, and times.  He only kept it for a few months and he hasn't made any entries in it for over a year and a half.
