2  General Discussion / Topical Climates / First Snow in Delaware on: December 16, 2010, 09:18:45 pm
Well here it is 3:00 pm in Delaware and we have about 1" of snow so far with more coming down.  My co-worker just came in and said the roads are bad because the snow is covering ice and everyone is moving slowly. Sad

4  General Discussion / The Humour Zone / Childbirth at 65 on: September 10, 2008, 04:53:39 pm
With  all the new technology regarding fertility recently, a  65-year-old friend of mine was able to give birth. When she was  discharged from the hospital and went home, I went to  visit.

'May  I see the new baby?' I asked

'Not  yet,' She said 'I'll make coffee and we can visit for a while  first.'

Thirty  minutes had passed, and I asked, 'May I see the new baby now?'

'No,  not yet,' She said.

After  another few minutes had elapsed,

I  asked again, 'May I see the baby now?'

'No,  not yet,' replied my friend.

Growing very impatient, I  asked, 'Well, when can I see the baby?'

'WHEN HE CRIES!'  she told me.

'WHEN HE CRIES?' I demanded. 'Why do I have  to wait until he CRIES?'

'BECAUSE I FORGOT WHERE I PUT  HIM, O.K.?!!

5  General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: Speed Dial on: January 15, 2008, 10:53:18 am
I don't use speed dial on any of my phones, work, cell or home.  I find I can dial from memory quicker.  By the time you hunt for the number and then engage speed dial I am already talking to whomever I called.

6  General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: Pondering titles and different countries on: October 11, 2007, 02:40:25 pm
Some other differences in language useage:

Bloddy is the adjectival form of blood but may also be used as a swear word or expletive attributive (intensifier) in Britain, Ireland, Canada, South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. Nowadays it is considered (by most of the population of these countries) to be a very mild expletive, and unlikely to cause offence in most circles.

Buns. You know what these are. You're probably sitting on them now. In the UK buns are either bread or cake rolls. Asking for a couple of sticky buns in a bakery in the UK  will mean Mr Crusty the baker will give you two cake buns with icing (frosting) on the top....

Fag. A goody but an oldie. In the UK a 'fag' is a cigarette. So in the song 'It's a long way to Tipperary' the line 'As long as you have a Lucifer to light your fag' is not a fundementalist Christian's statement that all homosexuals will burn for eternity in hell, but saying that 'if you always have a match to light your cigarette...'

Faggots. Meat balls made from offal (chopped liver) in gravy. Also a small bundle of logs suitable to burn on a fire.

Pants. In the US we call them pants In the UK they are called trousers; pants are the things that go underneath.

Rubber. In the UK a pencil eraser. Don't be shocked if the mild mannered new Englishman in your office asks for a pencil with a rubber on the end. Especially when he says that he enjoys chewing it when he is thinking.

Waistcoat. The US calls them vests.

I'm not sure how this came to be but I prefer EA, etc.  In the US a PA can also be the Public Address system.  I don't wish to be known as a public address system because that could infer loose lips, gossip, etc.  and an EA in our office must be very aware of confidentiality all of the time.

I took the test and came out a ENFJ.  I'm not quite sure what that means.  Extraverted Intuitive Feeling Judging, yes I am extraverted, intuitive and feeling but I never thought I was judging. We learn something all the time.

10  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Cold & Flu Season... on: October 30, 2006, 08:12:52 pm
I don't know about across the pond but here in the US we can purchase a product called Airborne.

The following is their advertisement.  Tired of cold medicines that do not work?  Looking for a effervescent cold remedy that really works? You need Airborne Effervescent health formula. A dietary supplement invented by a 2nd grade school teacher who was tired of catching colds every winter.

My son told me about this wonder drug and it works.  It costs about $6.00 a bottle and I take it when others in the office start with their colds.  It doesn't work against the flu but a flu shot works wonders.

11  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Do you use CPS/CAP or other certification in your signature? on: September 28, 2006, 10:51:24 am
I worked very hard to attain my certification and I am very proud to have achieved it, and I do use the caption after my name on all correspondence.  It has opened up conversations in which I have had to explain what they signify and other admins have expressed interest in attaining this certificate.

Why shouldn't we be proud.  Engineers use PE, Accounts use CPA, etc.  We are just as important as them and should let the world know what we are capable of.

Just my 2 cents worth.

My favorite is Gilmore Girls followed closely by the British comedies i.e. Are You Being Served, As Time Goes By, Keeping up Appearances actually most all of the UK comedies except for Benny Hill.

I also like Ghost Whisperer, Las Vegas and CSI.

I can smypathize with you.  I'm 63 and the only problems I have had and still have are really weird dreams.  When they first wake me I sort of remember them but once I get back to sleep and wake up again I can't remember the specifics just that they were either weird or really scary.  I have not had a restful nights sleep in so long I forget what it is like.

15  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: I feel like I've been punched. on: June 16, 2006, 09:29:12 am
This already happened to me and my husband.  In January of this year.  My husband is on over 13 different medications a day after about 65 surgeries.  He is a Vet so after much prodding by me and grumbling from him he went to the VA and gets some of his medication through them for only $8 a script.  This helps but they won't cover all of his meds.  He of course cannot work so we rely on my income and it is not going up as much as our medication cost.  There is nothing we can do about the cost of my medication so I have to pay the 35% increase.

If your DH is a vet you may be able to get help from the VA.
