Okay I am putting this as a separate topic because it links a couple of the others - how do books vary between British and American audiences?
I have just started a Stephen Jay Gould book - called "Life's Grandeur" in the UK but called "Full House" in the States and he feels there is sufficient distinction betweee the sporting cultures of the two countries to include a special preface in the British version to explain Baseball!
Thought it was an interesting coincidence that this was next on my reading list and look forward to seeing how the distinctions affect my perception of the book ...

That is a book where the author compares life to a baseball game? I believe my roommate has that from a college class she took. Let me know what you think and if it is worth a read. I wonder if we read a book on soccer if it would have preface of football vs football!

That's the one - he is a palaentologist really writing about evolutionary theory and using baseball as his 'theme' to work his whole theory on. I'm not quite finished but it is quite interesting, certainly quite readable for this type of book.
Contains quite a bit of statisical theory, so may not be for anyone who isn't keen on maths.
The one thing I can guarantee is that I wouldn't be reading it if it contained any reference to soccer!

I have always wondered if they change the spelling for books and publish twice. I know at times books are translated into other languages, French, German.. but do they consider British English worth proofreading? I have no idea, but it is one of those questions that make me wonder.

In the case of Life's Grandeur / Full House they didn't change all the spellings; for example they had changed the cover to British English (Palaentologist) whereas throughout the text it used Paleontologist. He also continued to refer to "Full House" all the way through (as in Poker) even though that was no longer the title of the book.
I suppose there is only a value in changing something that will cause offence or be completely misunderstood?

I have done some freelance proofreading for a small publisher in the UK. I was asked to specify whether I was proficient in reading american english. They would not rewrite the content before publication. I think the this would depend on the requirements of the publication and target audience.
