Working on technical writing jobs does not always mean you will work with products and processes only. You will also need to work with real people. These real people have different personalities which may clash or cause issues in the work environment. You have to be ready to deal with the issues and the people.
Being in technical writing jobs, I am a professional. Some people who are considered to be professionals do not demonstrate the professional attitude in some instances. On my part, I would not want it to happen to me. I want to behave as a true professional because I am truly one in stature and in substance. This is the first step in dealing with issues in the professional way. In other words, have the mindset of a professional.
Next, be prepared and do not let yourself be affected by the unprofessional behaviour of others. This is what I always apply in my dealings in my technical writing jobs. Be emotionally mature. Listen to others even though they are acting unprofessionally. Doing so, you are not only able to capture what they are trying to say, you also give yourself time to think well how to react.
Then, proceed with letting the tension cool down. Leave the issue for at least one or two hours if you need to deal with the issue during the part of the day or the day. Give all the persons involved some time to simmer down and go back to their senses. Again, you are also giving yourself the time to think well and prepare what are the best things to do to solve the problem. Now, you are ready to deal with the issues, solve the problem and get things done.
