Why do universities matter?
Universities create and distribute new knowledge
to businesses and other users
through research
Companies can benefit considerably from the knowledge, services and expertise the universities have to offer. This is vital if the region is to move to a high-value and knowledge-intensive economy.
The member institutions of the East Midlands Universities Association (http://www.emua.ac.uk/) all work together to EMUA aims to promote and facilitate co-operation between the universities and higher education colleges, to the benefit of the region and these institutions. This adds value to what could be achieved as institutions acting independently.
In addition, the universities in the East Midlands produce 39,000 graduates every year according to the Higher Education Statistics Agency. Many of the courses they study are directly relevant to the region's sectors, such as Food and Drink, Environmental Technologies, Technical Textiles and the Financial and Business Services.
Below average earnings levels in the region mean higher qualified individuals tend to look elsewhere for higher paid work, and this has led to recruitment problems and skills shortages for many businesses. As a result, the region is trying to retain its graduates and encourage others to return.
Research, development and skills development
are all key to remaining competitive and staying ahead.
