Last issue we invited you to let off steam via our new feature "Sound Off!". Well, several of you e-mailed us with strong opinions on various issues related to corporate hospitality, but we've chosen this rant from Katharine Fleck, an admin assistant in the Midlands.
Katharine works for a sales and marketing team of 12 in total, in an open plan marketing department. Her company provides a service for major utility providers in the region. Here's what gets on Katharine's nerves...
I think it's really unfair the way some people in our company get invited to all the do's, and other people never get asked. Guess which one I am! The only one I get to go to is the Christmas party, but then it would be a bit odd if I was the only person in the company who wasn't there. But when it comes to other events and hospitality events, I never get asked. All the sales team go along and have a great jolly, and they come back and the next week all I hear about is what a laugh they had. I think if I hear one more joke about what Simon did to Jason, I'll scream. And they never seem to realise that in the whole office I'm the only one who didn't go - and that I might be a bit hurt about that. Because I support them all year, and do all the stuff they don't want to do, because they think they're above it. So I think just once it would be nice if they invited me too. My mate in accounts says maybe it's because I'm young (19), but I don't think that's a good reason. I've worked here over two years, and I think it's unfair not to give these perks to everyone from time to time. I mean, I know the sales teams sell, and make money for the company, but I help them sell, don't I! |
