Dear Readers
How well do you manage your role? Do you control your worklife, or does it control you? With the pressures and deadlines of today's workplaces, it's easy to feel that you're constantly chasing your tail and hurtling breathlessly from one priority to the next. But when you step back and look objectively, you should feel that in reality you're managing a good relationship with your boss and colleagues, that your career is developing well, your workspace is workmanlike, and that you look the part. In this issue of DeskDemon Express, we invite you to take that step back to assess how well you're coping, and - equally as important - whether you look like you're coping.

As we all know, ultimately we are in charge of our own careers, and making and taking opportunities is our responsibility. But how do you know you're heading in the right direction, and what if you're not sure which direction that should be? Careers expert and author Sally Longson, who is also Editor of the Careers Strand with DeskDemon.com, offers some thought-provoking guidance in this issue of DeskDemon Express to help you make the decisions which are right for you.

Managing your relationship with your manager is another key element of your worklife. When it works, it makes every day easier and more enjoyable. But when it doesn't… hold on to your hats, because it can be a rough ride! The inimitable Lee Morrissey serves up her own PA perspective on the manager-PA alliance and offers some personal thoughts. This issue we also get some top advice on managing your junior staff and ensuring that relationship is working well.

We all have the same amount of hours in the day, but it does seem that some people achieve more in that time. How do they do it? Is it because they have assistants? Or is it because they enjoy what they do? Either is possible, but it could also be they are excellent time managers. In this issue you'll find some excellent reminders about time management skills - don't miss them!

It is a cliché, but the thing about clichés is, they are often based in truth. You may be doing a fantastic job, but if your desk is a disaster area and you regularly turn up for work looking like you had a fight with a grizzly bear on the way in, it gives out the wrong messages. We offer some expert advice on giving the right impression of professional calm and control. It's worth perfecting, especially for those times when you feel anything but in control!

In this issue we have two super free give-aways, plus we are launching our exciting Guest Editor competition for next year. If you've ever wanted to see what goes on behind the scenes, or if you fancy yourself as a journalist, this is the one for you! I look forward to working with one of you next year to put together a special edition of DeskDemon Express, edited by you.

Until next month...!

With very best wishes

Penny
