Dear Readers
Welcome to the April issue of DeskDemon's online newsletter
- I hope you're getting used to seeing these dropping into your inbox
each month, and that you're finding them of value. In this edition we're
taking a look at the dark arts of business finance. Many of you today
are responsible for spending the company's budget, so we thought it would
be a good idea to offer some tips and guidance on the best ways to go
shopping with the firm's money!
According to the latest Gordon Yates "Administrative,
Secretarial and Support Staff Survey", some 50% of bosses believe
that an understanding of the company's business is "essential",
and around 47% believe it to be "useful". Interestingly, 68%
of the employees quizzed for the survey also said it was essential to
be up to speed on the firm's business.
If you're serious about your career, then, you need to be serious about the organisation you work in - regardless of size, geographic location, or industry. Understanding the rudiments of business finance is essential. Sally Longson, author and editor of the Careers strand on deskdemon.com, gives you some advice that's right on the money, pointing out not only what you need to know, but how to source it.
Never shy of the nitty gritty at ON! Office Networks,
we have a range of excellent articles about budgeting and purchasing skills.
How to administer a budget in a small/medium sized enterprise from established
financial writer John Hancock will give you a solid basis for approaching
the task, while business journalist Sara Goodwins has some guidance to
help you brush up your purchasing skills. The subtitle to Sara's feature
could be "How not to be bamboozled by salespeople" - it's a must-read!
We're grateful this issue to Microsoft for contributing some valuable tips on using Excel 2003 to keep on top of your figures, and also to the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, who've come up with some great purchasing pointers - you may be surprised to discover that price isn't everything!
As a top PA, Lee Morrissey knows what it's like
to run a budget, and in this issue she gives us an excellent insight into
planning and monitoring her conference spend. Read it before your next
event - you'll find it runs more smoothly! And of course, where would
we be without our monthly update from Kerry, stuck in the office while
Janie roams the planet - don't miss the latest instalment of our serial,
the DeskBound Diaries.
I hope you find this issue a practical tool to help you work more effectively and, as usual, I'd love to hear your comments.
With best wishes
Penny Cottee
