Title: Yipee
Post by: newtofl on June 04, 2004, 05:50:09 pm
I was just taking a break and checked my home e-mails and found a message from an employment agency who found my resume on Monster.  They have a position in the town where I currently work and it would be working for a large wireless company.  I have all of the experience they are looking for and hopefully will have an interview on Monday with the company.  I already have the time off so I don't have to worry about that.

The e-mail was exactly what I needed for this bad Friday.  All of our adjusters and managers are off today at a seminar and my co-worker, myself and one adjuster are the only ones in the office.  She has been here for almost 10 years and is driving me crazy as well as the adjuster that is still here.  She has yelled at both of us a couple of times (yes she is serious and does it all the time).  I have a phone call at lunch time to speak with the agency - without interruptions and so I can talk without anyone listening and hopefully I will have an interview scheduled for Monday morning.

I am so excited about this opportunity as I have been looking on and off for about a year and was hoping that an opportunity would just fall into my lap (or my computer in this case).  I have been getting several calls recently and none have paned out so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks for letting me share.

Good luck on Monday and do let us know how you did.

My interview is tomorrow at 1:15.  The job is between myself and someone else so I have a 50/50 chance in getting the job.

Can you please give me some tips on what to say, what questions to ask, what to wear (I have a blue flowery skirt with a blue sweater with nice shoes that I wear once in awhile to the office but usually wear slacks so anything really out of the ordinary is strange) in order to not get caught in my current office as we are business casual/casual etc in order to land the job?

I am already nervous because I really want this job because I cannot take another week of being yelled at, looked at funny and anything else my co-worker does just to drive us all crazy (yes, it happens to almost everyone in the office and no one will do anything about it).  So as you can see, for my sanity, I really need to get this job or another job as quickly as possible.  And to top it all off, I have TOM and it is making me crabby (teary eyed) - hopefully it will be calmer by tomorrow.

Thanks for all of your help.

Could you wear a smart blouse or something under your jumper - then, when you leave to go to your interview, just take off the sweater and voila?

I think it would probably be prefable to wear a suit, or trousers and a blouse - something conservative perhaps.

I think suits or tailored seperates are what is expected for interviews - even if you aren't expected to wear one in the job.

I have added my 2p's worth on newtofl's interview request posting .....

However what I wanted to add was - I was always told, dress for the job you want, not the job you have!  I think it has worked for me.

I'd go one further and say that an interview is a special case all of it's own and that you can never be too smart.

Much the same sentiment, but slightly different technically.

I would agree with bethalize on this one.  I always wear either a suit or pants suit to an interview regardless of their attire.

Hi Beth - my comment was of course once you are in a job, not at an interview.  I mean if McDonald's are interviewing you, you should still wear a suit.

But I was told if you are in a company as say, an admin assistant and want a job as an office manager, you should dress accordingly to show that you have what it takes to do that job.  Whereas if you come in every day in t-shirt and jeans you won't be taken seriously.  (This is also backed up in Trinny and Susannah's What Not to Wear book which accompanies Series 2).

The interview went great.  The manager I spoke with asked several difficult questions that I think I answered correctly and without a lot of hesitation.  I also spoke with the woman that I would be replacing and she was great.  She told me a little bit about the position and at the end told me I would be a great asset to the company.  I called the agency that I would be getting the position through and left a message letting him know that everything went great.  Hopefully I will hear today but if not, no later then tomorrow.

Now for the wait - I may hear either today or tomorrow and my co-worker is driving me nuts and wanted to know if I had an interview because I had a skirt on which I have worn before.  She asked me straight out if I was interviewing and I told her I did not have to answer that question and basically told her it was non of her business.  She told me that she would not tell anyone if I told her - but I do not believe and I will keep to my story until I actually will be leaving.

I will let you know how it works out.

Susan

Hope everything works out and you hear soon.  I agree you should stick to what you have said and just wait it out til you hear either way.

Good luck!  Let us know how things go.

Glad to hear it went great.  Sorry I was late in posting my reply to your query for interview questions... glad to see it wasn't needed.

Keeping fingers crossed that you'll hear good news soon....

Thank you for all of your help.  I got a call from the agency today and the person that I was not able to speak with yesterday (the boss) wants to meet with me.  The other 2 people I met with really liked me and the agency believes this is just a formality but I should not say goodbye to my current company yet.

Hopefully I will hear something soon since this is driving me nuts.

I agree with CG, sounds very promising.  Sending positive vibes your way.  Crossing fingers is tough to do while your typing cause I make more typos that way.  LOL!  But will be thinking of  you.  Let us know how things go.

Well I finally got a call today from the agency and unfortunately I did not get the job.  They interviewed someone after me and they hired that person (the person was through another agency).

I guess things happen for reasons and hopefully something new will come up soon.  I am disappointed but not totally upset since I have a job already, I know that I can look and be somewhat choosey.  We can now take the vacation we have scheduled (and really need) and our finances will just continue to be the same since I was really woried about finances since this was a temp/perm job and I need benefits.

Now I know why I had a bad feeling this morning and I actually feel calmer then I did this morning.

Sorry to hear that you didn't get the job.  It's hard to jump into a new job when it is temp when there are no guarantees on salary and stability like the job you have.

When I was interviewing and didn't get a job, I tried to look at it like I had gotten some hands-on practice interviewing, so that when the perfect job finally came along I would be the most polished interviewee there.  (though ironically, when I got this job, I temped-to-hire and never ended up having an interview).

Thank you Laura,

I am currently working for a company that I am not happy with - my first permanent position since I moved to Florida (I've been here for 2 years).  I have been looking on and off and lately have received several calls but none have panned out.  This was my first interview and I thought I had it and was told that all I had to do was speak with the boss and that was it - pretty much a done deal I was told.  At first, I was not unhappy about the decision but it finally has hit home and I didn't realize how much it was a great fit - so I thought.

I will keep looking and when the right job comes along, I will grab it and go.

Thank you and everyone at deskdemon for all of your support
Susan

Keep your chin up.  Maybe this was just a dress-rehearsal for the real opportunity that fate has coming your direction.  Don't give up, but do give yourself time to be upset about not getting the position.  Then treat yourself to a luxury (an ice cream, a bubble bath, an extra 15-min reading time) and get ready for the next opportunity.

I'm sorry, too, Newtofl.  I hate when that happens--they make it sound so promising and then, phht.

Countrigal is right on about taking time to feel sad about the situation.  After you acknowledge it, you can move on to whatever is waiting around the next bend.

Best wishes.
