Title: Today's Shark Tank Post by: blufire21 on December 10, 2002, 04:23:59 pm Veteran pilot fish hires on as IT director for an online services
company. He's only hours into the job when he begins reviewing IT department policies and procedures -- and it's not a pretty picture. "They appear to be either chaotic or nonexistent," fish says. When he gets to the backup and restore procedures, he learns that a full backup is run every evening. "So how often do you perform a test recovery?" fish asks a sysadmin. "Never," says the surprised sysadmin. "Why do you ask?" Shocked pilot fish asks, "Then how do you know a backup tape can be read and can be used for a restore?" Sysadmin shrugs. "It takes 12 to 14 hours to write a backup tape set," he replies. "We don't have time to READ them, too." Tried to restore from the back up tapes and it was unreadale. That is bad enough but almost a year later we are still using the same back up tapes and procedure and no one is checking to see if the back ups are usable.
