Title: Secretarial Seminars
Post by: movinonup on November 22, 2002, 12:19:43 pm
My employer is looking for ideas for in-house seminars for its admins.  Does anybody here have any suggestions?  We're in the Detroit, Michigan area.

Thanks in advance!

A couple of years ago, after polling my fellow admins, I called a local community college and was able to hire a part-time professor to do an on-site workshop on "Business Writing for Clarity", which included brushing up on grammar, punctation, etc.  A couple of managers asked to sit in, also!

The topic was a little bit dry, but the whole group agreed it was a very useful refresher course.  The instructor kept us laughing by sharing some hilarious examples of business writing gone bad!

I'm sure you'll get some great advice here!

If the objective of the seminars are primarily for the capacity building of admins (training like events) a lot of topics can be included such as communication, time management, reporting writing, record keeping, minutes taking, telephone ethics, organizational behaviour, HR functions etc etc.

However, often companies (having offices in multiple cities) arrange such seminars for networking and creating harmony and consistency in their administrative works mainly through interpreting polcies. In such seminars which are kind of workshops admins coming from different cities (but working in one firm) usually describe their standard way of doing a thing. In this way, they work out the incosistencies and find a way out in light of actual policy or properly interpret the policy.
