Post by: dedlered on November 12, 2001, 04:27:38 pm
The news here has just reported an AA flight to the Dominican Republic has crashed in Queen's.  260 people on board....... My prayers to them and their families...

I get "CNN Breaking News" e-mails, so I about choked on my cocoa when I read it...  can't get to CNN's web site, but DH is home this morning and reports are that this does not appear to have been a terrorist attack.

Even so... how awful!  My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those who were injured or worse, and, AGAIN, to the NYFD & NYPD as well.

Unfortunately, the neighborhoods which were hit by the falling debris happen to be the neighborhoods where most of the firefighters/police who were lost in the WTC attacks had lived.  Enough already.  God have mercy on us all.

Fortunately, engines do not just fall off of jets, so it will be interesting to see what they determine was the cause.  I have my own suspicions which, in the interest of sanity, I will keep to myself.  What a frightening ordeal for the already troubled people in that NY neighborhood!

I had a very rude and scary awakening this morning. The sound of a low-flying plane over my apartment building (of which I live on the top floor). But it sounded like it was headed straight for my window. Scared me so badly I couldn't get back to sleep. It was so loud and so close. All I could think about was all the terrorist highjacked planes crashing into buildings.

Laundryhater,

We get those every now and again at our place too, they fly so low they almost shake the house and we are about 10-15 minutes away from the airport.  I guess it depends on weather conditions and where they are coming in from cause it doesn't happen on a regular basis.

Know what ya mean though, when you hear them fly in so low like that it makes you wonder and a bit uneasy.

I still have a 1-second panic every time I hear a helecopter coming to the hospital, which is just across the street from my building, where I'm on the top floor.

I know exactly what you all mean.  I live in a semi-rural area.  I had a scare a few weeks ago.  It was after dark and I heard a low-flying, fast-moving plane.  I just stopped what I was doing and literally held my breath for the few seconds it took to pass overhead.  Just had time to breathe a sigh of relief, and HERE COMES ANOTHER ONE!!  I realized then that they must have been military planes, but it scared the sh** out of me for those few seconds.  When I told a friend what happened and said that I felt I was becoming paranoid, her response was, "You and the rest of America!!".  I guess it's only natural that we feel that way.  I hope in time we can hear a plane overhead and NOT have these thoughts.  But I guess it will just take time.

I had a similiar experience the other morning.  Hubby was showering, I'm waiting my turn and hear a helicopter.  You know the type, the large military gun and trasnport type.  Where we live is so out of their regular flight path that hearing not only 1 but 7 of them, circle the area was enough to make me pause.  They were flying in a formation that reminded me of a round-up, like they were trying to move in on something/someone without thier knowing it, and from all directions.  I wasn't so much worried about them hitting my house as I was of what they might mean.  Who/what were they "hunting", and were they now flying circuits over our house in a defense of something?  Hubby and I put it down to an excercise by one of the National Guard units and went on with our day, but for a bit there it was a weird feeling.

The building I work in is close to our municipal airport (not a large one) and the runways are (apparently) not very long.  A lot of the planes come in as low as possible and sound like they're going to take our roof with them.  And our building is only two stories high!  However, a couple of years ago, one the planes DID hit an apartment building across the street from us (another 2 story building).  The pilot was killed, but no one in the apartment building was injured.

So, if it sounds like a plane is literally on your roof, it could actually be!

Now with all this concern about airplanes, does this mean you will not get in one at the present time?

I know I've been reluctant to fly and it's mostly a money issue with me.  But if the opportunity presented itself to where I can fly and either go visit someone or on a business trip, I wouldn't hesitate.  Would you?

I would just be cautions of where I flew into.  For example, bossie didn't want to fly to Luguardia today, understandable.  But it didn't stop him from flying.

What are your thoughts?

Ha! Prices have come down so much that we're looking at taking a trip. Got to support the economy .

When it's time, you go. I know we can do things to minimize the risk of dying, such as not jumping off cliffs, but I don't want to live my life watching out for something that will probably come when I least expect it.

Ellen, please fly, because that fear spills over into other areas of life.  You seem like too good of a person to let that happen to you.  In any case, you've certainly got to be a patient person, if you'd be willing to drive or take a train all the way across Texas to get anywhere!  That is one, big, honkin' State y'all have got down there.
