Title: Wish me luck! Post by: Katie G on November 17, 2011, 05:34:20 pm Saw a position open up on my organization's website that I think I'd be perfect for! After much introspection, I just don't think I'm particularly suited for the department I'm in currently. The people are lovely, Boss is good, but this just isn't my "thing" if that makes any sense. It's been, well, years since there's been anything posted that I think would work for me, so tonight I'm logging on and submitting my application and resume.
Wish me luck! Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: msmarieh on November 17, 2011, 09:41:07 pm Good luck Katie!!! Hope you get it!

Big Good Luck from me too! Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: Chatham Lady on November 18, 2011, 12:14:32 pm Good luck from me too!
Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: Katie G on November 29, 2011, 09:52:48 pm Well, when I went online that night, but posting was gone! In my organization, that means it was filled, probably a week ago. ::) Oh, well. I did see another possibility that also looks interesting and would be a step up, so I got that in pronto. I've also reactivated my profile on Monster and updated my LinkedIn account and have the word out to some former coworkers that I'm "exploring opportunities".
It's funny -- once I've sort of made up my mind to start looking, I'm feeling calmer at work. As if knowing I've "given myself permission" to look elsewhere, I'm not feeling quite as trapped, even though there's no guarantee for anything. Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: msmarieh on November 29, 2011, 11:44:09 pm I think that makes total sense. It's very liberating knowing you are "on the way out". You can be much more zenlike about problems and stresses, since you only have to put up with it a short time longer (hopefully). :)
Good luck finding something! Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: gee4 on November 30, 2011, 08:54:18 am How can an internal job be filled before -
- being advertised? - applications are received? - candidates are shortlisted? - invited to interview? - the job is offered? Totally bizarre! Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: Atlanta Z3 on November 30, 2011, 03:59:23 pm A company can fill a position legally without ever advertising or interviewing and fill it with the boss's offspring. I recently inquired about becoming a floor caption where I volunteer usher and was told they don't accept applications but approach a volunteer when they see the need. I asked one of our employment attorneys if this was legal. Oh yes he says, they can hire whoever they want without advertising or posting a position. As long as they don't discriminate on race religion etc...
Synopsis: just because companies have hiring practices doesn't follow that this is federal or state law. Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: gee4 on November 30, 2011, 04:15:19 pm An internal position has to be trawled otherwise it is discrimination to appoint one person when others should be allowed the opportunity.
That wouldn't happen in my company. Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: Katie G on November 30, 2011, 05:20:36 pm How can an internal job be filled before - - being advertised? - applications are received? - candidates are shortlisted? - invited to interview? - the job is offered? Totally bizarre! Aside from any legalities -- our website is not always the most up to date. It may have been posted there for quite some time before I happened to see it when I decided to start looking. I work for a public institution -- and they're very careful about possible discrimination suits when it comes to employment. I have no doubt all the steps Gee listed were abided by -- they just didn't take the posting off the web fast enough. Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: gee4 on November 30, 2011, 07:02:49 pm But there must have been a closing date. I too have worked in the public sector, so I know how it works.
Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: officepa on November 30, 2011, 11:07:26 pm In an organisation I worked for jobs were advertised on the internal board but it was well known that ones with a short (usually 7 days) closing deadline were already allocated to someone but they had to go down the advertising route to ensure they were 'seen' to be giving everybody an equal chance.
I agree with the fact that once you have decided to do something such as look for another job, if you are unhappy in the one you are in, you do feel calmer and even stronger which can only be a good thing as it makes you more positive that you will get what you want in the end. Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: Katie G on December 20, 2011, 05:47:44 pm Well, nothing yet. Have put in for some other positions as well. I'm looking for a step up in salary and title. I don't see any point in making a lateral move in the organization at this time. It's been a bad six months, but I'm starting to see a little light on the horizon. Funny how that works, isn't it?

Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: Katie G on January 04, 2012, 09:03:18 pm Have an interview tomorrow!! And the crazy thing is that this is for the one position that I thought was the long shot. Not to mention the one with the biggest increase in title/salary...
Fingers crossed! Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: JessW on January 05, 2012, 10:01:18 am GOOD LUCK! :D
Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: msmarieh on January 05, 2012, 04:38:26 pm Fingers crossed here too! And toes, eyes, etc... My co-workers are looking at me stranglely, but it's for a good cause. ;)
Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: Katie G on January 06, 2012, 05:29:44 pm Thank you ladies. It was a bit of an odd interview. Hard to get a "vibe", if you know what I mean. I'm wondering if they mis-read my resume, because it was sounding like they may want someone with a more hardcore business/accounting background. As in, someone with an actual business degree....Ah well, we'll see what happens.
Title: Re: Wish me luck! Post by: msmarieh on January 06, 2012, 10:01:30 pm A lot of it comes down to how you sell yourself.
One of the things I always do in an interview is ask - Is there anything you are looking for with this job that you don't feel like you see in my background? Makes them spell it out that, well we wanted someone with business background (or whatever) and gives you an opportunity to explain how you in fact do have what they are looking for (or recognize that you don't and the job is not the right fit for you) or sometimes it makes them say, no you've got everything we're looking for (which is a good thought for them to finish an interview). |
