Title: Mistake
Post by: Wanda V on November 26, 2014, 06:21:21 am
I made a mistake.  I know I wont get fired for it, but will get "lectured" about it and my boss will give a sense of.. "disappointed in you" for a while.   Without telling details on the internet, if you made a mistake, know it is going to come out soon, would you wait until after Thanksgiving to fess up or say something right away?

I know it is hard, but I know co-workers read DeskDemon and may put 2 and 2 tighter at some point.  I know my mind is made, and will wait until Monday to let my boss know I did something wrong.  I just want the 4 day holiday to be good.  Would you do the same?

A PS.. LOVE the new look.

I would fess up before. How are you going to have an amazing 4-day weekend? I will definitely consume your holiday. I would own up to the mistake. Even if the boss is giving extra feedback, it's the right thing to do. As the boss, I would think he would respect you more for it!

I'm sorry- It will consume your holiday thoughts...not I :)

I would definitely fess up now.  I have found that my boss is more sympathetic and understanding when I am honest and forthright as soon as I make a mistake.  It happened just the other day.  I made a mistake, not huge but still, he was screaming and yelling in his office about it, I came in and said "it was my mistake, I forgot to mail that and will take care of it immediately".  His demeanor changed immediately, he calmly said "okay, please be more careful" and the whole thing was done.

I would be uncomfortable with that hanging over me all weekend.

I would have fessed up. That would have given the long weekend for it all to blow over. ;)

What did you end up doing? :D

I know I'm coming in late to this thread, but I agree with reporting to your manager as soon as possible after you have realised you have made a mistake.  Indeed, if my Assistant left it a few days before telling me, I would be disappointed because we could have rectified things all the sooner if I had known about the matter earlier.  Your manager is paid more money than you to manage - to solve problems, provide direction and leadership.  That's what they do.

I didn't say anything, the meeting was cancelled so all was good and I wont be making that mistake again.  Next time I may not get so lucky.
