Title: How Many Sick and Personal Days Do You Get Off?
Post by: bohorquez on July 12, 2001, 10:00:18 am
Hi all -

Here is my question, how many sick days, personal days do you get off for the year?  Do you get bereavment (sp) time as well?

I get 3 sick days and 3 personal days and depending on how long I'm here I get 1 week vacation.  I receive no time for bereavment (sp) and if I take off for that reason then they take my vacation days.  I don't think that's right but I'm interested in reading what you get!  Please let me know!

Bridget

We get 5 sick days, 3 personal days, after a year you get 1 week vacation, after 2 years 2 weeks, after 5 years 3 weeks.

You do get bereavment but only if it's an immediate family member, 3 days if its a parent or brother or sister, and I think only one day if it's an in law, grandparent, etc.

Zip.  Zero.  Zilch.  Nada.  No personal, no sick, no vacation.  I'd probably get bereavement time because I work for my stepdad and any bereavement I experience would very likely also be a bereavement for my mom.  I came to work sick a couple of weeks ago because I didn't want to take the time off without pay.

I've mentioned before that I have more reasons to stay in my current position than to leave it - but this isn't one of them!

We get 18 days for personal time off for the first 5 years. At 5 years we get 23 days, at 10 years, 28 days. Promotion to higher pay grades can speed up the time it takes to get to those levels, but 28 days is the maximum. We are not allowed to accrue time off, it's use it or lose it.

We also have a sabbatical program for up to 6 months after, I think, 10 years with the firm.

Bereavement leave is up to the discretion of the manager, usually as much time as you need, and it is seperate from PTO.

We are also paid for jury duty.

We get 2 personal days (the other subsidiaries - get 3 - we have to take one for Mardi Gras Day). But its not my fault the whole city shuts down to party, I feel I should get three   1 extra (ha ha ha)

We get 2 weeks vacation after 1 full year (pro-rated before 1 yr depending on hire date) and every 5 years you get another week, max is 5 weeks (after 20 years)!!.  We can also purchase up to a week of vacation if needed (I always need extra "mental health" vacation days to keep my sanity).

We get up to 26 weeks paid sick days (100% - 70% of salary depending on how long your out sick (it refreshes back to 100% after 6 month with no sick days) - although with my boss I would have to be on my death bed to use a sick day!!

We get 40 hrs for dependent care time off (dr. visits, sick kids etc.).

We get up to three days for a death in the immediate family.

We also qualify for the Family Medical Leave Act - up to 12 weeks leave of absence.

We also get paid for jury duty.

We get a total of 5 personal/sick days.  Most people try to save one or two for cold and flu season in December, then everyone has to take off before Dec 31, so there's always some trouble scheduling everyone's time off at the end of the year.

To counteract this, most people just come in sick and spread their colds around.

We also get 3 bereavement days (for parents, spouses, children or siblings), but they must be consecutive days.

We don't have much in the way of perks, but I have a great boss and that makes up for a lot.

Wow some of you ladies have it pretty good!  I can't help but wonder if we're being ripped off here at my job.

How do you quailfy for the Family Medical Leave Act?  I'm taking some time off (maternity leave) and know that my boss said that the some of the state laws don't apply to us because we're a small company.  Nevertheless I told her I was taking 2 months off but I thought maybe I would get paid for like 2 weeks or something but I'm NADA.

That's stinks...I could use the money!

And a partridge in a pear tree. :-)

Here's the info my company gave us on the FMLA:

The FMLA of 1993 allows you, if you are an eligible employee, to take family & medical leave from your job to fulfill certain family obligations - while protecting your job and health benefits.  I believe a company who has more than 50 employees must comply with the act.  Some qualifying reasons are:

Birth of and care of newborn child

Placement of and care of adopted or foster child

Care for spouse, child or parent who has a serious health condition

Own serious health condition that prevents you from working.

You are allowed up to 12 weeks.

At my company, you have to have atleast 12 months of service and 1,250 hours to qualify

Hope this helps... nolalady

Medication Certification must be provided for is the reason is illness.

We get 20 personal days and 9 holidays..not too bad..

we can use the 20 days however we see fit and if we are out sick longer than 3 days, it becomes short term disability, so that we don't lose all of our personal days.

We get 2 weeks vacation after 1 year, 3 weeks after 5 years, 4 weeks after 10 years, 5 weeks after 17 years, and 6 weeks after 25 years.

As far as sick leave, we get 1 week after 6 months, 2 weeks during the 2nd year, 3 weeks during the 3rd year, etc. From 10-20 years, we get 10 weeks. From 21 years on, 11 weeks.

We get 10 holidays and 1 personal holiday. We get 3 days for breavement.

The best part is that my boss is very understanding.

We get 12 days/ year for sick leave, which can be accumulated and carried over from year to year, with no maximum.

On AL, for the first 4 years with the company you earn 12 days / year.  From 5-10 you earn 18 days / year, and for 10+ years with the company you earn 24 days/year.  These days can be accumulated from year to year too, with a maximum of 30 days carried over.  When this point is reached, AL is "Use or Lose".  Can't wait till I get there!!

And since all of our leave is actually earned by hours, we only take the amount of leave we're actually gone.  If I leave 30 minutes early, it's only 30 minutes of AL or SL used instead of a whole day (which is the way my cousin's office is).

We also have FMLA, which incorporates our SL.  We can take up to 40 hours of FMLA, but it subtracts from our SL balance.  If we have to be out for an extended time and run out of SL, then we can use our AL, and the entire time we're off on paid leave, we're earning more so it's a good situation.  Plus we get all the Federal Holidays off.  Not a bad place to work.

Some of these benefits sound great and my company has very good benefits too, however if I'm gone more than 2 days my desk looks like a tornado hit it and sometimes it's not worth taking the time off.  I'm going to be gone 6 days next month so we'll see what happens.  I'd get a temp in but it takes longer to train them to do expenses/databases that I usually end up doing them myself when I return and killing myself working all that extra time.
