As this article says we are FAR from beam me up Scotty, but it made me think if we lived 100 years ago would we ever believe the things we have now? I wonder where the world will be in 100 more years. Title: Re: Teleporting article on CNN Post by: countrigal on October 10, 2006, 07:37:46 pm Heck, I'm thinking a lot less than 100 years ago. When I was a senior in High School (back in 1988-89) we were just starting to learn some programming (Basic) and to get to "play" on a computer in school. You had to take a computer programming class or use your library time to get on a computer then. None of my friends had one in their house, or were considering it. It was something that we would use in specific high-tech jobs, like Engineering, but wouldn't need until then. Less than 4 years later, computers were being a steady "must-have" for college students, and were starting to show up in homes everywhere. Now, not even 20 years later, who can say that they don't have one in their home, or at least wishes they had one? And now kids as young as 1 are learning to use a computer.
I love to talk to my grandmother about the changes she saw and what impressions were of the "new gadgets" of the time... whether they thought they'd last, be helpful, etc. I mean, she saw cars come into existence as a standard... tvs, microwaves, dishwashers, indoor plumbing become standard... the list is endless. And look at the advances in phones! They've gone from an operator on party lines connecting you to set locations, to where one can literally talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime thanks to satelites and the right types of phones. It's amazing the changes that have occurred in the past 100 years (or less) and I can't even start to imagine what the next 100 years will hold as far as changes. For example, my grandmother loved to talk about her father's investment oppotunity. Apparently, he had gotten ahold of a little bit of money and decided to invest it in a milk company instead of Pepsi, since "everyone drinks milk, and Pepsi's just a fad!"
