Title: Admin Career Paths/Development
Post by: jahdra on August 09, 2001, 05:20:45 pm
Does anyone have any documentation regarding administrative assistant career paths or development? For example, what's required to move up from an administrative assistant to a executive assistant.

My boss is trying to put something together for our team, but the firm either doesn't have anything or it's not easily accessible. Anyway, we want to move forward with this, so any help you can offer is appreciated!

Jahdra -

I completed an Admin Job Title comparison some time ago and I think it will suit your needs.  It's a couple of years old, but with a little "tweaking" it should work for you.

Give me an address and I'll e-mail it to you.

Good Morning -

I've sent the information to both of the addresses in the posting.

I forgot to inform you that I saved it in Word 97-2000 format so that you should be able to open it.  I have Word 2000 here at work, but that doesn't mean everyone else does.

Let me know if you have any problems with it.

Enjoy!

CuriousT, I'd like to see your info as well.  My current employer doesn't really have a "career path" for Admins.  We basically just stay in our positions until an Admin who works for a higher ranking executive moves on.  Then, we can apply for that open position.  Basically, the Admin's title is pretty much tied to her boss's position.  I was recently promoted from Admin to Senior Admin by my boss, but I could not get the title of Executive Assistant because as a Group VP (rather than a "Corporate" VP), my boss doesn't rank high enough on the corporate ladder.  Go figure!!

Anyway, please email your info to me at energizer68us@yahoo.com.  Thanks!

My apologies everyone.  I've been "out of the loop" for the last few days.  Everyone should have the information in their respective e-mails by now.  Hope that this will work for you.

I felt that the "supervison and training of subordinate staff" was a bit antiquated--especially in my old job.  There was NO ONE for me to supervise...and never would be, because of the nature of the location that I supported.

Dear Curioust,

Seeing a great demand of your valuable work-piece, is there any way of putting it on the web or make it appear in DD articles somehow - because I am thinking of upgrading myself and interested in your paper too (mnaeempk@yahoo.com). Thanks

Sorry this post is so late - does anyone still have a copy of this wonderful document, and could you email me a copy?

I have to write down my aims, etc, where I see myself in the future for Thursday as bossie is refusing to speak to me after I have requested a meeting, and I want to have as many ideas as possible before I present this.

I'm not a happy kitten at the moment.

Thanks in advance,

Pussy

Couriust hasnt posted since 2001, but some of the people who requested that paper still post, maybe one of them still has a copy.  To all those who have been posting for years and still visit, I just want to say thank you.

What are you looking for, maybe there is an article or piece on DeskDemon that can assist you as well?

I wrote an article which was published in the April 2005 issue of OfficePro Magazine called Developing the 21st Century Administrative Professional (subtitled Strategies for Taking Your Career to the Next Level). It's available here:

My problem is not so much moving to the next level as establishing another level. I have taken on a substantial number of duties previously done by middle managers who have left the company and were not replaced. Our Human Resources Dept. revised my job description to include those duties, but would not change my title.

I received a somewhat larger than average salary increase last  year, but HR would not adjust the salary range for my position.

If anyone has a document listing administrative titles and the duties typically associated with them, I would really appreciate receiving a copy.

Pat

PS This is my first post.

Patfalk, welcome!  Hopefully this will only be the first of many posts to come.  I'm sure someone has something that you might find useful.  I seem to recall that we had a post at some point that went into this a bit... more of a discussion maybe.  Perhaps you'll find it if you search old threads....  Otherwise, wait a bit and give some of our long-time posters a chance to see what they have, look around DD and see if we have an archived article there somewhere, and our newer posters can chime in with all their wealth of knowledge.

Once more, welcome... and good luck finding what you'e looking for.
