Title: Speaking of reassurance...
Post by: bethalize on September 10, 2001, 09:15:19 am
You may remember that I mentioned that my job has just disappeared and that I am hanging on by my fingernails.

I now have the chance to go back to University (I've only been out two years!) to do a Masters in computing - fees paid.

The bottom has dropped out of my stomach. I don't know which way to go. Pro: my other half will support me. Con: I won't have any money of my own for another 18 months. Pro: I was looking at doing a Masters in computing anyway. Con: it wasn't this one, it was more based towards the Internet. Pro: the fees will be paid for me. Con: I have to be unemployed by the end of Thursday (gulp!). Pro: I didn't have a job for definite anyway. Con: they might insist my boss stays for another year. Con: my boss is great and I like working for her. Pro: I really don't like lots of people here. Pro: this company is going down the tubes Con: there's always work for a temp.

I need to make a decision tonight, and I would love to hear your opinions/advice, just in case there is something to consider that I haven't though of.

Was that an understatement? I just want to stand on my chair and yell "Heeeeeelp! Life-changing decision to be made!"

Juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuump!

Seize the opportunity ... a Master's is a Master's!  And it's fully paid for! And your other half is supportive! Go for it!

Go for it!!!  This sounds like a once in a lifetime chance.  You should never, ever, ever pass up a chance to further your education.  And having someone who is supportive of your doing this and another willing to pay your fees - you can't get much better than that.

GO FOR IT! Do not pass go, do not collect $200.    This is much more money in your pocket in the long run.  Take this opportunity to get that Masters and then hit the market with more education to back you when you're once again job searching.  And the fact that honey is supportive of this makes it all the better.  What a great chance to redirect your career (or boost it).

Let us know what you finally decide.  And Good Luck!

It's already been said...  the pros seem to outweigh the cons - go for it!  Good luck!

Okay, not like you need another vote but go for your Masters!!!!!  Do it now because it will be very difficult to do it later when you are bogged down with life's obligations.

Liz,

Let's see here.  You have fully paid Master's Degree waiting for you behind Door #1.  Behind Door #2, you have???  Behind Door #3 you have ?????.  I'd say go for Door #1.  It is a sure thing and you can't lose.

I would shave my head to have the opportunity to go back to school & get my Master's Degree, and have it paid for!  Go for it!  (After all, you wil probably make a boatload more money once you finish!) Good luck!

18 months will go so fast you won't believe it - so you won't have much money it's a small sacrifice.  I say go for it.  I wish I had the opportunity to go to college after high school.  Water under the bridge they say.

I would say, "Thank you, job, for disappearing."  18 mos. is a small price to pay for potentially much better future employment opportunities.  Go wild, Liz!

Ah, you guys convinced me - and made me cry. What great support you are!

I feel very emotional. Thank you.

With the warm fuzzies in a cold office,

Liz

Have to add my thanks to all of you.  One of the benefits where I work (university) is full tuition remission for undergrad and graduate degrees.  I've been putting it off because of other personal "stuff" that's been in the way, but now it's time to get off my butt and start!  Too late for the fall semester, but I'm calling to make an appointment with an advisor...TODAY!
