Title: Summer Showers Post by: gee4 on June 15, 2009, 11:52:27 am We are having a horrendous thunder storm here at present - lightening as well.
The lights in the building have flickered several times. I hope it clears. I have no umbrella with me today but thankfully I did bring a coat. So much for a great British summer! Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: Chatham Lady on June 15, 2009, 01:08:19 pm We've just got a thunder storm too Gee and today, of course, I put the washing outside. Oh well!
Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: JessW on June 15, 2009, 01:57:16 pm Washing was done on Saturday when it was lovely and sunny, but was about to get the lawn mower out, then wash the car. Will have to wait till tomorrow, I suppose.
Nice day for a week off! You should have heard how loud the rain, thunder and lighting has been. Am glad it is over, for now! Jess (one week's leave and loving it!) Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: gee4 on June 15, 2009, 01:59:19 pm Apparently it's supposed to be like this all week.
It better stay dry next week when I'm off for a few days to watch Wimblerdon....ha ha! Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: Atlanta Z3 on June 15, 2009, 03:20:09 pm We finally came off drought restrictions. (No outdoor watering of any kind, no car washing public fountains turned off etc.)
I'm not complaining about rain any more. Our standard summer weathers is afternoon thunderstorms just in time for quitting time traffic. I'm just happy I can wash my car again - taking a soft top convertible through a car wash is a no-no, plus most days I enjoy washing my car. Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: JessW on June 15, 2009, 04:01:23 pm Gee. don't worry about the weather for the second (traditionally rained off) week of wimbledon. don't forget that the Centre Court now has a roof, so play will continue no matter what!
Hope you are wrong about the rest of the week! J Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: gee4 on June 15, 2009, 06:46:32 pm Oh yes I forgot, looking forward to it.
I think the north is going to get the worst of the showers so you might be ok towards the end of the week. Enjoy your time off! Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: JessW on June 15, 2009, 07:12:50 pm Mixed feelings about that, parents and brother all in the north, me in the south east and other brother on jersey now (left cyprus for more civilised climes!)
Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: gee4 on June 15, 2009, 07:22:27 pm Oh yes my friends came back from Cyprus too. Home 18 months now.
Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: Cozwaz on June 16, 2009, 08:39:03 am We had torrential rain up north for about half an hour or more complete with thunder (didn't see any lightening).
Thank goodness I cut the grass and did all the gardening I wanted to do on Sunday, but my veg patch is thankful for the rain Jess forecast is a bit mixed for the rest of the week but fingers crossed it stays bright and dry where you are for the rest of your week off. Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: geminigirl on June 16, 2009, 10:13:51 am I left work yesterday with a borrowed umbrella to get to my car (only a hundred yards away but still!) and had great fun getting into my car - it was an automatic brolly which wouldn't darn' well close up! So I'm getting soaked trying to close it. And then give up and have it semi-opened in the passenger footwell!!
Drove off in hailstones which you could still see on the ground for about 15 minutes after the storm had passed. Britain in June! I'm off to Scotland end of next week and I'm hoping for at least no rain! Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: Chatham Lady on June 16, 2009, 10:22:47 am We also had hailstones in Kent last night and a heavy duty shower. But lucky for me this didn't reach home until after work and my line load of washing was beautifully fresh and dry. The showers were definitely localised yesterday. Have a good break Jess.
Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: JessW on June 16, 2009, 12:06:47 pm Thanks Chathamlady! At least it is beautiful at the moment.
Now jess, get of your backside and mow the lawn! Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: Jackie G on June 16, 2009, 12:26:30 pm Gem, we haven't had hailstones (not that I've seen in the south/central Scotland) yet - but we have had quite a lot of rain. But of course it wouldn't be quite so bonny without it, so we shouldn't complain! The temp is quite mild though!

When you have cut the grass, treat yourself to a bowl of ripe strawberries and sit back and admire your handywork! Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: JessW on June 16, 2009, 06:01:26 pm I went one better, and went for a a half of beer instead! but thanks for the thought.
J Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: gee4 on June 16, 2009, 06:48:05 pm Ahh, thirsty work!
Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: Cozwaz on June 17, 2009, 10:05:56 am ... and the rain keeps coming! Hope it brightens up next week - my parents are coming to stay for a week!
Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: gee4 on June 17, 2009, 10:39:10 am Going home yesterday my car was 24 degrees. This morning walking across the carpark to work I was soaked.
Ok Mr Weatherman (has to be a bloke surely) fix our summer asap! Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: JessW on June 17, 2009, 11:25:00 am Gee, the weathermen will never sort it out in this country, not enough investment from the government to fix the meteoroligal office (so pretty much like british rail / network rail!)
Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: gee4 on June 17, 2009, 11:30:22 am Ha ha!
This aircon is blowing a right gale today. Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: JessW on June 17, 2009, 06:44:30 pm Ok. Mary Poppins moment - "let's go fly a kite, up to the atmosphere..." Come on everyone, you know the words!
Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: gee4 on June 18, 2009, 12:51:09 pm Would anyone notice Jess?
Forecast - warmer next week. Thank heavens I have a few days off out of this igloo and bossie will be off soon for a whole month! Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: diamondlady on July 16, 2009, 02:35:49 pm In Upstate New York it was the coldest/wettest June on record. High's in the 70'sF and lots and lots of rain. We're still not getting the summer temperatures we usually get which is upper 80. Today and yesterday were almost normal days with no rain and highs in the low 80 with no humidity. Highly unusual weather, which makes for tough gardening. Everyone on the pumpkin website is complaining about the lack of warm temperatures and either too much rain or not enough. For us this year, it's been way too much rain. We had a really harsh thunderstorm on Saturday. High of 82 with chance of afternoon storms which means on the way home gully washer storm so I can't get in the pool or gardens. Really been a frustrating season.
Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: Cozwaz on July 17, 2009, 01:07:35 pm Well its throwing down the rain here today. Its our local agricultural show tomorrow and the forecast for that isn't looking any better. :(
Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: diamondlady on July 22, 2009, 08:34:38 pm Well it's our yearly Hemlock Little Worlds Fair this week back home, and it's typical weather for us, hot/muggy/wet, LOL. It's an improvement from June, as that was cold/damp/wet. LOL. We will probably see Summer in September! ::)
Title: Re: Summer Showers Post by: gee4 on July 23, 2009, 02:14:45 pm I don't know about muggy/damp/wet but today at lunchtime you could have been sunning yourself, and just this minute we have had a thundery downpour.
Makes it difficult to know what to wear to work every day. Yesterday and today I went for jeans as boss is still off and because I got soaked on Tuesday and had to sit in wet trousers for part of the afternoon. ??? |
