Title: London Calling
Post by: peana on July 07, 2005, 11:09:46 am
Are all you city girls okay?  I made it to work before all the trouble and should be lucky enough to be able to walk home (if I can get pass the police), but at the moment I'm not going anywhere!  A couple of our offices are within a police cordon and no one is allowed to enter or leave the building.  Everyone is very shook up.

Please report in!

We are being told we are not allowed to leave the office, but at the same time I have heard that Sea Containers House also are not letting people IN either.

Luckily all our people are safe, if not stuck in various locations (so far!).

Hope everyone else is ok,

Jess

Here's praying that all of you London gals and your families and loved ones are safe.  Please know that my prays and thoughts remain without throughout the day.

My son is in London this week on business and I'm really worried about him.  Neither his wife or I have been able to make contact as yet.

Thank you for your kind words.  I hope your son is able to call you soon.  A lot of the mobile networks here have gone down or are suffering an intermittent service, so it's difficult to contact people.  Hopefully you'll hear from him soon.

Here's hoping that everyone from DD and their families are safe.

Pat - hope you hear from your son soon.  My hubby is down in London today and I have not heard from him yet so, like you, I am worried but keeping fingers crossed that everything is ok.

Val

Thanks for checking in with us, we are all happy to hear that you are safe.  Is there anyone else that you can think of who hasn't checked in yet?  How about our DD staff members??  Pat, I am sure that your son will contact you as soon as he can.  Take care everyone.  Be safe.

Jill

I know this is a little like shutting the door after the horse has bolted, but would it not be a good idea if we all banded together by city, then if there are 'disasters' like this or similar, then the board cna pm people in that city to a) check they are alive, and b) get them to check through their connections if some's relative/colleague is in that city and if they are ok.

What do you all think, in principle, about a just in case support system as DD members are all over the place and can give support etc if they want to.

Just an idea, of course, but I would be interested in what everyone thinks?

What a horrible horrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with all you hoping you all come through this safe and sound. It's so sad how monstrous some fanatical individuals can be.

Praying and hoping that everyone is fine.  What a horrible tragedy!  It brings up the same horrible disbelief as when New York was attacked.  It's hard to believe that people like this actually exist in this world.

You are all in my prayers.

I've just spoken with my nephew who works in the City - he was having a breakfast meeting near where the worst tube bomb exploded when it happened.  He said everything was fine one moment - they didn't hear or feel anything - and then the next dozens of police and emergency personnel running around.  It was very scary.  He's now walking home across London and hopes to be home in about 90 minutes.  Says it's a very surreal atmosphere.

The news says there are now over 30 dead.  We've got off very lightly when you think that over 2 million use the tube each day - and so much few casualties than Madrid.

My prayers are with everyone who's caught up in this nightmare.

My prayers on behalf of all of you, especially Pat and Val. Hopefully, it's from the phone lines being down.
Does anyone else have loved ones missing?

I just heard from my daughter in law who has just heard from my son.  He is OK - Thank God!

Generally, when he is in London he works in an office in Cambridge which I'm told is about an hour away from actually being in London.  But today, as luck would have it, he was in London proper about 1 mile from the worse of the explosions.  I guess where he is has been cordoned off - nobody in; nobody out.  And phone service is sporadic at best.

All our London people - stay safe.  My prayers and thoughts are with you today.

I, too, am thinking of you all and hoping you have the much needed strength to get through this time.
Seeing the people in bandages, and the looks of disbelief, was like seeing the coverage of September 11 all over again.

My heartfelt prayers are with all of you in London, throughout the U.K., and the world, since many tourists visit the city.

Since I live and work in New York City, I am totally empathetic.  After the 9/11 attacks, our building was evacuated and Manhattan was sealed off.  The situation was horrible.

I am so sorry that this tragedy has occurred.  Please take care of one another.  My prayers and best wishes are with you.

My office is very close to where it happened, I'm fine, worrying about all the colleagues who may not be. I travel in normally between 9.30 and 10 and only rarely on  the Piccadilly line. It was some time before I realised (a) that this wasn't just a tube failure and (b) that my boyfriend and parents (and one of my step parents) would be worried.

I hope everyone else is ok and would be glad to know.

Raindance signing in!

I had quite a journey home yesterday(including a route march through the City), but made it in one piece.  I'm very shocked, naturally, but made myself get on the Tube this morning to come into work.  I'm just praying for the dead and injured, and their families.

I hope that all my fellow DDers based in London are safe and well.

Best wishes,

Raindance

Pat - glad to hear that your son is ok.  Hubby phoned yesterday afternoon to say that he was safe and well and was in a queue of traffic trying to get out of London.  He arrived home at 9.30 last night absolutely shattered and emotionally drained, he was not actually near any of the explosion areas but said that the atmosphere in London was really spooky.

I was lucky and my thoughts and prayers are with those who are still waiting to hear from loved ones.

Take care everyone.

Val

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I'm glad to hear that everyone is safe.

I found this quote that I think is brilliant:  "As Brits, we'll carry on -- it doesn't scare us at all" said tour guide Michael Cahill, 37. "Look, loads of people are walking down the streets. It's Great Britain -- not called 'Great' for nothing."

Don't stop living because if you do, the terrorists have won!

Now all we need is DD 'management' to create a database by location and some sort of automated message which can be responded to.  This could be sent to specific areas in the event of events like yesterday, and then taken from there.

Glad someone else thought it a good idea...

Jess

The following e-mail was sent to me, which in light of yesterday, I think is an excellent idea.

East Anglian Ambulance Service have  launched a national 'In case of
Emergency (ICE)' campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon
Weston .
The idea is that you store the word 'ICE' in your mobile phone address
book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted 'In Case of Emergency'.  In an emergency situation ambulance
and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next
of kin are and be able to contact them.

My 15 year old daughter was in London yesterday,  working with my sister at a publishing company in Shaftesbury Avenue as part of her work experience - luckily I was able to contact them both very quickly.  The company were superb in establishing whether anyone of their several hundred staff were missing, across many different London based buildings and organised 'walking' trips home, so that people going in the same direction walked together.  My daughter, sister and her colleagues walked from Shaftesbury Avenue to Acton in just over 3 hours, chatting to many strangers along the way.

I love London and having grown up in the city, absolutely know that nothing will ever, ever conquer its spirit.

I have been thinking of you all! I was sick all last week and couldn't connect at home, and was wondering and wondering if all was OK with you in London and at DD. I hope that all of you and yours are safe.

Just back to work from holidaying in Majorca - imagine how we all reacted to this news - brought back memories of the Omagh bombing and 9/11.

Has anyone noticed the date yet - 7/7/2005?  I just realised while I was away that 911 is the US equivalent of the UK 999 emergency number.  Shame they didn't get those who were responsible for the Omagh bomb as quickly as they did these suicide bombers - makes you wonder!

The reason why the authorities found the London bombers so quickly was partly because the youngest was reported missing by his parents, and they also - forgive me for being so gruesome - found his body and concluded from its condition that he had been at the seat of the explosion.  The London bombers were also carrying documentation which identified them.

That's what I understand from the newspaper reports.

Believe me Rain, the Omagh bombers are known, they just can't be lifted - all politics.
