Title: Congrats to Wills n Kate
Post by: gee4 on November 17, 2010, 02:04:46 pm
I was off yesterday and managed to catch the news at lunchtime about Prince William and Kate Middleton.  I thought it was very touching that he gave her his mother's engagement ring.

Hear Here, Gee.

Mind you, now we know we are in trouble - the feel good factor has been rolled out to distract the populous (hope it works 'cos the guys at work are miserable enough while nattering about x-factor and The Apprentice!) ;D

While a marriage is always good to hear about, do we really need to be bombarded on every news bulletin about details that are pointless to the average person in the street - such as speculation over the venue - why not just announce it when they have decided for anyone interested.  And do we really need to know what she likes to eat,  and what the food at their reception is likely to be and other such minutiae, as if it should matter to us?

OMG I must have missed that news item!  :D

Impossible not to hear it, Gee, really, really impossible............. you could be up a mountain on the other side of the world with no means of communication and still you would know everything in detail about everything......

But, if you like this sort of thing, great. I don't, just in case you couldn't tell. From now on, my lips are sealed, along with my ears, eyes.....  :-X

Aww shame.  I think it's very poignant and always nice to hear good news instead of bad for a change.

I was a big fan of Diana so will be watching as her eldest son and heir to the throne starts a new stage in his life.

Why speculate on the venue, it's going to be Westminster Abbey.

As for the ring, anybody like to comment on that one?  I hope she's not superstitious and that she really really likes sapphires as that's a stonking big stone.  But Diana's ring - no way would I be wearing that one!

Title: Re: Congrats to Wills n Kate
Post by: officepa on November 18, 2010, 03:02:57 pm
Personally I think she should not be wearing this ring - was she even given a choice?

If it was me, I would want a ring of my own choice without the 'history' surrounding the person who originally owned it being mentioned every time it is shown.  Even if I were her and actually liked this ring (whihch I don't) I would possibly wear it on occasions but for my own engagement, I would want my own ring.

Obviously you don't share the sentiment girls!  ::)

Both William and Harry were very young when their mother died....I think it's right they do something so Diana's memory can be part of the celebrations.  It has been done for a reason and I am sure Ms Middleton knew about it beforehand.

Can't believe your comments.  Guess it's just as well he's not marrying either of you two!

Everybody has their own opinion Gee and we don't all think the same as the next person so speaking for myself, my comments are as I state them and if they differ from, in this case, your way of thinking, then so be it.

That may be but you're comments are quite rude.

"I would want my own ring..." sounds like a spoilt child.

* * *

Amazing that when I have a difference of opinion, I'm shot down, but for the rest of you it's acceptable!!

Patriotic in some ways http://www.deskdemon.com/dnet/index.php?topic=10330.0 and not in others...

MODERATOR'S HAT ON

Ladies, separate corners please. There is no reason for this conversation to degenerate in the way it has. Please stop and desist from the personal insults, effective IMMEDIATELY or this thread will be locked.

I take delight when something good happens in this country especially as regards the monarchy.  After all our previous future Queen of England didn't have much luck!

It may be just another piece of news but I hope we hear about it every day until the event itself.  It amazes me that people consider themselves in a position of authority to judge others.

"People who judge don't matter and people who matter don't judge."

This started out just a nice thread.  Try to think about this, once the comments move to a personal level it, people can read it differently where one person maybe teasing maybe they are not, another may read it as an attack, or even an insult so this needs to stop, now.  Keep to the topic and not about others on DeskDemon.

Exactly.  My posting was about something to celebrate, not an opportunity to nit pick.

29 April in Westminster Abbey - fab!

My company are closed that week for Easter so a nice start to the May Day weekend. :)

I'm hoping it will be a Public Holiday   ;)

Dusty, it will be a holiday in England.

The Scottish Parliament will need to agree it, and I'm not sure how much devolved powers the Welsh and Northern Irish Assemblies have for this - they may just fall into Westminster's guidance on this one.

On an aside re the date:  heard it on the news while driving and they kind of paused when they said 29th . . . and I thought no, he's given her the ring already, don't make her get married on the same date (July), but thankfully they've chosen an earlier month!

Soon, though, I bet the chosen dressmaker is already frantically working out a design/pattern!

I am absolutely enchanted with the British Royal family.  We do not have royals here in America.  The British monarchy is the closest we Americans will have.  I will be watching them closely.  And you can be rest assured I will be up at 2 AM EST watching the wedding no matter where they hold it.  Happy days to Will and Kate!

They could have gone for the 30th instead of the 29th  >:( It's a Friday and I will be working sniff sniff so will not be able to follow it on TV.  Though I bet we'll get plenty of it over the week.

I remember watching Di and Charles wedding. Spanish tv broadcasted the whole lot of it.  ;D

Duque,

The Royals usually do not marry on a Saturday...too common apparently!  :o

My company is already closed that week for Easter so no idea if we will get an extra day off or not.

Well for Charles and Di, I was off school for the summer holidays and for Andrew and Fergie I was again off for the summer holidays about to start College.

However, Prince Edward (now The Earl of Wessex) married Sophie Rhys-Jones in St. George's Chapel on 19 Jun 1999 - was that a Saturday?!

And, the marriage of The Prince of Wales to Camilla Parker Bowles in St. George's Chapel following a civil ceremony in Windsor's Guildhall took place on Sat 9 Apr 2005.

"Traditionally royal weddings take place on a weekday, usually a Friday rather than a Saturday."

It has been confirmed, my company will recognise the additional bank holiday on 29 April.

We were due to be closed that week for Easter but employees will be re-credited with annual leave for that day.

You lucky lot! I believe you will have about 11 days off in a row! Then my family jibe about the bank holidays in Spain!!

Well we close for the Easter week anyway and it just happens to run into May Day the following Monday, although it's a long way off and a very long wait until Easter.

A lot of companies in NI probably won't close because 29 Apr is being recognised as a bank holiday, not a public holiday.

Not all companies recognise the same statutory bank holidays eg. we do not close on 17 March.  It is a bank holiday, not a public holiday...but other companies I have worked for, do close on that date.

Hi Gee,

This past Sunday night, TLC (cable company in the US), had four hours of programming on the Royals.  I watched the whole thing.  The first hour was about the last 8 royal weddings in the last 60-years.  From QE II to Price Andrew.  By far, Princess Diana was the most lavish and my favorite.

The second hour was a biography on both Kate and Wills.  Showed them growing up, how they met, the break up and then the engagement, and guessing on what Kate's wedding dress will look like.

The last two hours were about Queen Elizabeth and her marriage to Price Phillip and also about her reign for the last 60-years.

I loved every minute of it (except for the commercials).  I was mesmerized!

Oh now that would have been something special to watch.  Imagine how things have changed over the past 60 years?

Looking forward to 29 April!  Diana would have loved it.

Seems a few pundits are taking bets on what song Wills n Kate will dance to at their reception.

Dancing Queen maybe? :D

Apparently Kate is a big Abba fan!

This is a new generation and so exciting.  I remember when Wills was born and now he's getting married.

Would loved to hear Harry's speech!  :D
